Funeral Assistant "In loving Memory"
UNION, WV --- Gavin Boyce Copeland, age 67, of Union, WV, passed away on Thursday, August 10, 2023, at the Peyton Hospice House in Fairlea, WV. Born September 1, 1955 in Princeton, WV, he was the son of the late Paul L. Copeland and Patricia Wills Copeland. He was a 1973 graduate of Union High School and a 1977 graduate of Concord College. Gavin was an educator for the Monroe County school system for 33 years, teaching 6th grade at Gap Mills Middle School and Mountain View Middle School. He also served as Girls’ Basketball Coach while at the “Gap”. He owned and operated Copeland Construction, was a realtor for Bradley’s Real Estate, and mowed and maintained lawns in and around the Union area. Following his retirement from teaching, Gavin worked at the Groves-Mann Funeral Home in Union, WV. He was an avid hunter of deer, bear, racoons, and turkeys. Gavin attended the Union United Methodist Church in Union, WV.
Survivors include his loving wife of 45 years, Connie M. Copeland of Union, WV; two sons, Jared Copeland of Morgantown, WV, and Aaron Copeland and wife, Jamie, of Pawleys Island, SC; two sisters, Gleda Thomas and husband, Ralph, of Greenville, WV, and Gayla Adkins and husband, David, of Greenville, WV; two grandchildren, Graham and Parker Copeland of Pawleys Island, SC. Several nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends also survive.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, August 13, 2023, at the Groves-Mann Funeral Home Chapel in Union, WV with Reverend Dallas Forren and Pastor Gene Fullen officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery, Union, WV. The family will receive friends Saturday, August 12, 2023, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. In loving memory of Robert L. "Bob" Groves
UNION, WV --- Robert L. “Bob” Groves, age 69, of Union, WV, passed away on Saturday, March 26, 2022 at his home with his family by his side, following an extended illness. Bob was born October 19, 1952 at Richwood, WV, and was the son of Edith Lee Trout Groves of Ripley, WV, and the late Rev. Hubert Harold Groves. Bob was a 1974 graduate of the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science in Pittsburgh, PA. He was honored to serve many families as a funeral director and embalmer. He had worked at the Broyles-McGuire Funeral Home in Union, the Wm. S. Broyles Funeral Home in Peterstown, the Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill, and in 1994, Bob and his wife Carol established the Groves Funeral Home in Union, where he worked until his retirement. Bob was an avid farmer and he also owned and operated the Union Country Store for 20 years. Bob was proud of his community and the many friendships he made along the way. He was a member of the Monroe Lodge #77 A.F. & A.M in Union, Royal Arch Masons #21 in Ronceverte, Greenbrier Commandery #15 in Lewisburg, West Virginia Funeral Directors Association, Life member of the WV 4-H All-Stars, 25 year 4-H Leader, Monroe County Swine Club, Union Chapter #122 OES, a former member of the Peterstown and Oak Hill Volunteer Fire Departments; and a member of the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Nettie, WV.
In addition to his mother, survivors include, his loving wife, Carol Martin Groves of Union, WV; one daughter, Michelle McFall (Mike) of Union, WV; grandchildren, Kristina Bostic (John) of Peterstown, WV, and Zachariah McFall (Morgan) of Sinks Grove, WV; step-grandchildren, Alex McFall of Georgia, and Lucas McFall (Brittany) of Georgia; great-grandchildren, Aiden, Phoebe, Tristan, Melany, Chandler, Shelby, and Brinley; two sisters, Patricia Slagle (Scott) of Ida May, WV, and Michelle Cox (Jeff) of Kenna, WV; and special companion, Bailey, the family Border Collie.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 29, 2022 at the Groves-Mann Funeral Home Chapel in Union, WV with Pastor Mark Shafer and Pastor Mark Smearman officiating, along with Pastor Jim Rogers serving as an honorary officiant. Burial and Masonic Graveside Rites will follow in New Lebanon Cemetery at Pickaway, WV. Members of the Masonic Lodge will serve as Pallbearers. Masonic members, Bill Guy and Brian McCurdy will serve as Honorary Pallbearers. The family will receive friends Monday, March 28, 2022 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
