Sinks Grove, WV --- Virgil Thurmond Helvey, age 88, of Sinks Grove, WV completed his journey on earth on Thursday, September 17, 2015 at Peyton Hospice House in Fairlea, WV. Born November 1, 1926 at Hollywood, WV he was the son of Jesse Thomas and Elizabeth Ann Hoke Helvey. Mr. Helvey was a U.S. Army World War II Veteran. He was retired from the WV Department of Highways. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, spending time with his family, and serving the Lord. He will be remembered for his sense of humor, his great hugs, and his big hands and heart. He spent most of his life in Hollywood and Eads Mountain and he was also a member of the Bruffey Memorial United Methodist Church at Hollywood, WV.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son, Ronald Helvey; daughter - in- law, Pattie Helvey; great grand-daughter, Sierra Wykle; six brothers, Leonard, Woodrow, Frank, Wade, Clayton, and Fred; seven sisters, Maggie Glover, Ruby Young, Gertrude Martin, Gladys Bland, Cinda Howard, Nellie Davidson, and Ruth Davidson. Those left to cherish his memory includes his wife of 67 years, Alice Lorene Dowdy Helvey of Pickaway, WV; one son, Tom Helvey of Hollywood, WV; four daughters, Norma Helvey of Hollywood, WV; Carolyn Trainer and husband Frank of Neola, WV, Rosemary Halcomb and husband Randy of Chesapeake, VA, and Kathy Helvey of Hollywood, WV; one brother, Dave Helvey of Wenatchee, WA; grandchildren, Lee Helvey and wife Heather, Melodie Wykle, Randall Halcomb, Jr. and wife Sapna, Christinia Goins and husband William, Anthony Helvey , and Holly Halcomb; twelve great-grandchildren; he is also survived by four sister-in-laws, Bettie Helvey of Roanoke, VA, Connie Helvey of Simpsonville, SC, Ilamae Morgan of Organ Cave, WV, and Peggy Ladd of Ravena, OH; and one brother-in-law, Billy Whitlock of Marie, WV.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, September 20, 2015 at the Hollywood Tabernacle at Hollywood, WV with Rev. Jonathan Hunt and Rev. Gerald Roberts officiating. Burial will follow in Hollywood Cemetery at Hollywood, WV where the WV Honor Guard will conduct Military Graveside Rites. Friends may call Saturday, September 19, 2015 from 6: 00 p.m. to 8: 00 p.m. at the Groves Funeral Home in Union, WV.
