GAP MILLS, WV --- Thomas Leon Martin, Sr., age 74, of Gap Mills, WV, passed away Friday, January 24, 2020 at Wake Forrest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC. Born July 30, 1945 in McDowell County, WV, he was the son of the late George Alexander and Phyllis Derbyshire Martin. Thomas was a simple and hard-working man who loved his family dearly. He was a coal miner with U.S. Steel for 11 years. He also owned and operated Stairweld in Northern, VA until his retirement. Thomas was an avid hunter and fisherman, and he loved being in the outdoors. He loved the Lord and was of the Baptist Faith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Kenneth Martin. Survivors include, his loving wife of 34 years, Carrol Butler Martin of Gap Mills, WV; four sons, Thomas L. Martin, Jr., and wife Millie of Gap Mills, WV, Tracey Martin of Gap Mills, WV, Larry Hoback and wife Gail of Bramwell, WV, and Stephen Ferguson and wife Peggy of Thomasville, NC; two daughters, Cassi Martin of Thomasville, NC, and Kim Trent and husband Tim of Thomasville, NC; three sisters, Pearl Stevens of Durham, NC, Ann Branson and husband Doug of Greenville, SC, and Nancy Babish and husband Ed of Stevensville, MD; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive, all whom he loved very much. Graveside services will be held 1:00 p.m. Friday, January 31, 2020 at the Martin Home (8073 Moncove Lake Road) at Gap Mills, WV, with Pastor Don Trent officiating. Those planning on attending the graveside service are asked to meet at the Martin home by 1:00p.m. on Friday. Grandsons will serve as Pallbearers.
