UNION, WV --- Samuel "Sam" Craig Cathcart, age 80, passed away Sunday, November 19, 2023 at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Roanoke, VA after a battle with Pulmonary Fibrosis. He was born May 3, 1943 in Columbia, SC to the late Ellen Griffin and William Doty Cathcart of Kershaw, SC. He graduated from Gordon Military School in Barnesville, GA and the University of Georgia in 1965. He served in the U.S. Army as a Commissioned Officer and 1st Cavalry Division during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion, AARP, and Vietnam Veterans of America Life Member. Sam was an employee of the Bank of Monroe for almost 36 years as a teller and assistant cashier and was treasurer of the Union Chamber of Commerce for several years.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant twin brother, Joseph Griffin; sister, Betty Britt; and a nephew, Bill Britt. He is survived by his wife of almost 55 years, Darlene Echols Cathcart; daughters, Tracy (David) Carpenter of Ripley, WV, Bonnie (Andrew) Green of Roanoke, VA, and Jo Ann (Jeffrey) Davis of Elkview, WV; niece, Laura (Britt) Gluhm of Waverly, GA; a special first cousin, Sabritt D. (Buddy) Cathcart of Winnsboro, SC; and several cousins in South Carolina; Sam had 4 grandchildren, Samuel Carpenter, Allyson Davis, Tyler Green, and Kiersten Davis.
Sam enjoyed watching sports on TV, going to movies, and gardening. After his retirement in 2008, he was seldom seen without his wife and they enjoyed traveling, especially to Pigeon Forge, TN and Dollywood. He attended Fairview Christian Church at Keenan, WV.
Graveside services along with military graveside rites will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday, November 25, 2023 at the Fairview Christian Church Cemetery at Keenan, WV with Pastor Everett Fraley officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the graveside service in the sanctuary of the Fairview Christian Church at Keenan. David Carpenter, Andrew Green, Jeffrey Davis, Steve Echols, Tyler Green, and Samuel Carpenter will serve as Pallbearers. Larry Echols and Kenneth "Butch" Vass will serve as Honorary Pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Fairview Christian Church 3451 Sweet Springs Valley Road, Union, WV 24983 or to a Military charity of your choice.
