Obituary

UNION, WV – Richard Hall Crews Jr., age 75, of Union, WV, passed away peacefully at Lindside Healthcare Center in Lindside, WV, on Friday, February 6, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of unwavering service to both his country and his community. Born August 23, 1950, in Opa-locka, FL, Richard was a man who lived his life with a deep sense of duty, and a heart for helping others. A man of faith, he attended Mount Alexander Church in Sarton, WV.

A proud veteran, Richard served his country in the United States Navy. His commitment to service continued long after his military career, as he dedicated over 40 years as a volunteer with the Union Volunteer Fire Department. For four decades, Richard was a steady and reliable presence at the station, protecting his neighbors and mentoring generations of fellow firefighters.

Beyond his public service, Richard was a devoted family man. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Cathy Crews of Union, WV; his daughters, Donna Crews Ream and husband Mike of Kernersville, NC, and Heather Crews of Union, WV. He was a doting "Paw Paw" to his three special grandsons, Michael, Jared, and Alex. Also surviving are his siblings, Margie (Russell) Jones, Robert (Nancy) Crews, Shirley Withrow, and Brenda Shanklin. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard Crews Sr. and Bernice Martin Crews; and sister, Patricia Crews Wykle.

Richard will be remembered for his bravery, his dry wit, and his steadfast reliability. Whether responding to a midnight fire call or spending an afternoon fishing with his grandsons, he gave his all to those he loved.

In honor of his lifelong dedication to the fire department, the family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Union Fire Department to support the community he served so faithfully.

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects at Groves-Mann Funeral Home in Union, WV. Memorial service will be held at 6:00PM on Saturday, February 14, 2026, with Pastor Terry Utterback officiating. Visitation will be held from 4:00PM until time of services.
