ALDERSON, WV --- Ralph Joseph "R.J." Smith, age 67, of Alderson, WV, passed away Thursday, December 19, 2019 at his residence. Born March 17, 1952 in Union, WV, he was the son of the late Ralph J. and Marcella Smith. R.J. served his country in the U.S. Army Special Forces. He served two deployments in the Vietnam Era. He worked several years at the B.F. Goodrich Plant at Pickaway. R.J. enjoyed history, especially history on the Civil War. He loved his horses and was an avid gun collector and lifetime member of the NRA. R.J. loved spending time with his family and having lots of fun with his grandchildren. Survivors include his wife of 19 years, Ruth Hall Smith of Alderson, WV; three daughters, Jennifer Skaggs and husband J.J. of Quinwood, WV, Molisha Samples and husband Ty of Rainelle, WV, and Kristen Tincher and husband Ezra of Fairlea, WV; two step-sons, Charles McCarty and wife Mandy of Second Creek, WV, and Chris McCarty and wife Tasha of Second Creek, WV; grandchildren, Steven and Brandon Alderson, Aiden Skaggs, Wyatt Samples, Dalton and Wade Tincher, Josh Tincher, Kaydance McCarty, and Laramie McCarty; and several aunts and cousins also survive. Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, December 22, 2019 at the Groves-Mann Funeral Home Chapel in Union, WV with Jim Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Upton Cemetery at Flat Mountain. The family will receive friends on Sunday, December 22, 2019 from 1:00 p.m. until time of services at the funeral home.
