Phyllis was born in Nobe, WV on December 4, 1935, and graduated Calhoun County High School in 1952. She became an accomplished weaver and made rugs for the WV Governor's Mansion and the private home of former President Jimmy Carter and wife Rosalyn. Former Greenbrier Hotel decorator Carlton Varney used her rugs in his clients' homes and yachts.
Her rugs are treasured possessions of family members and many who visited the Mountain State Art and Craft Fair in Ripley, WV and Tamarack near Beckley, WV.
More than anything, Phyllis was a kind, generous friend to most who knew her as well as an unassuming woman who never got "above her raisin'."
Phyllis' family would like to thank those who provided medical care for her in the recent past. They include James Griffith, M.D. of WVU Department of Behavioral Medicine in Charleston, WV; Charleston Area Medical Center, General Division, Surgical & Trauma ICU; Peyton Hospice House in Lewisburg, WV.
The family suggests donations to the Alzheimer's Association in memory of Phyllis. Those wishing to send the family online condolences or would like to sign the online guestbook, please do so by visiting www.groves-mann.com Arrangements by Groves-Mann Funeral Home in Union, WV.
