SINKS GROVE, WV --- Phyllis Hinkle Baker, age 86, went to her Heavenly home on Friday, September 29, 2023, at Lewis Gale Medical Center in Salem, Virginia. Born July 12, 1937, in Sinks Grove, WV, she was the daughter of the late Cecil and Mildred Hinkle. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her grandson Michael Lee Furrow, three siblings: Mary Ann Ballard, Cecil Hinkle Jr., Nancy McCormick, and a stepson, Douglas Baker.
Survivors include her loving husband of 58 years, Art Baker; two sons: Rick Bennett (Tina) and Jim (Linda) Bennett of Sinks Grove; One daughter, Susan (Wes) Sheridan of Waiteville, WV. Additional survivors include multiple grandchildren, great grandchildren, one great- great grandchild, with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and countless friends. Beyond family, Phyllis was known as "Granny" to so many that she loved and cared for throughout her lifetime. She was the matriarch of the family. Her home was always open to all.
Phyllis was a 1955 graduate of Union High School. Following her graduation, she went to work at DHHR in Monroe County. She also worked at the Federal Bureau of Prisons in Alderson, WV. She later became co-owner of Greenbrier Memorial Vault Company and Greenbrier Memorial Gardens in Lewisburg, WV. Up until her recent illness, she worked for Tri-State Wilbert Vault Company. Phyllis was a life-long Monroe County resident participating in the Sinks Grove CEOS Club for 60 years and served as their president for many of those years. She initiated Adopt-A-Highway and remained active in it for over 34 years.She was also a member of the Eastern Star and a lifelong member of Mount Pleasant Church in Sinks Grove. Phyllis devoted her life to helping others and volunteering her time, money, and efforts to her neighbors and community.
Granny Baker enjoyed gardening, cooking, feeding family and friends, shopping, traveling to Dollywood and Florida, and always loved tending to her flowers. Despite her many achievements and hobbies, Phyllis took the most pride in her family and helping raise many children over the years. She loved the Lord and lived a life in His service. She will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing and loving her.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 3, 2023 at the Groves-Mann Funeral Home Chapel in Union, WV. Entombment will follow in the Greenbrier Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Lewisburg, WV. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, October 3, 2023 from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.
