Obituary

GREENVILLE, WV --- Otis Richard Pence, age 93, of 7332 Greenville Road, Greenville, WV 24945, passed away Thursday, July 9, 2020 at Bowers Hospice House, Beckley, WV. His death was due to an accident burning a brush pile near his home.

Born June 21, 1927, he was the son of the late Herbert and Anna (Shanklin) Pence of Greenville, WV. Otis was a loving husband who cared for his wife for many years. He was a dedicated Director of the Monroe County Senior Citizen Centers for 34 years and recipient of many distinguished awards for his service, was a successful dairy farmer and local area milkman for 17 years, and had various other careers in WV such as owning and operating a restaurant in Union, worked on a sawmill and delivered US mail. His hobbies included many outdoor activities as in gardening and growing flowers to give away, keeping a manicured lawn and most of all, helping others. Otis was a veteran, a member of the Greenville Ruritan Club and a graduate from Greenville Schools. He attended and is a member of the Greenville Methodist Church where he served as the Sunday School Director and teacher of the adult class. He also attended Union Church of Christ and the Presbyterian Church in Greenville, WV.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Dixon Pence of 72 years and his daughter, Sharon "Sherry" Pence and daughter-in-law, Connie Lynn Pence. Those left to cherish his memory are one daughter, Pamela Tilley and husband Larry of Florida; two sons, Bill Pence of Greenville, WV, and Matthew Pence of Salem, VA; six grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and special friends, Richard and Teresa Callison of Salem, VA. Otis was the last survivor of his immediate family.

Due to the Coronavirus, there will only be family services at graveside sites. It was Otis' wishes not to have a visitation or funeral. The family is very grateful for all the heartfelt cards, letters, pictures, prayers and caregiving these past months. We also know Otis would have thanked everyone, too. At this time, the family suggests memorial contributions be made in honor of Otis to the Greenville Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, P.O. Box 4, Greenville, WV 24945 and in lieu of flowers sent to the family or graveside, please send them to the nearby nursing homes.
