Obituary

UNION, WV -- Mrs. Mabel Elizabeth Clower Sarver, 89, of Union, passed away on May 7, 2015. She was born on May 10, 1925, the daughter of the late Albert N. and Mabel Hogbin Clower of Petersburg, WV. In addition to her parents, Mabel was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Mr. Herbert Lee Sarver, Jr., and a daughter, Catherine Bowyer of Ripley, WV. She was also preceded by her siblings, Elwood (Penrod) Clower; Marion (Chippy) Clower, Clement (Clem) Clower, Junia Marie (June) Clower Inskeep; and Anna Lee Clower VanDyne.
A graduate of Petersburg High School, Mabel attended Potomac State College in Keyser, WV, for two years, before finishing her home economics degree at West Virginia University in 1947. She moved to Union that summer as a Home Demonstration Agent, serving the families of Monroe County and the Farm Women's Clubs in that capacity until 1952. She returned to work in 1966 teaching biology at Union High School, where she remained until her retirement in 1986. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, the International Society for Key Women Educators, actively attending meetings until 2015. She served the Union Presbyterian Church as an Elder beginning in 1974.
Mabel was an avid supporter of the 4-H program, both through her years with the Extension Service and as a club and county leader. She served as the leader of the No-I-Nu 4-H Club in Union in 1965, continuing as the club's leader for over 15 years and was inducted into the 4-H All Stars.
Mabel loved US and WV history, and was a long standing member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC), serving as an officer in the organization for many years.
Mabel will be remembered fondly by her two surviving daughters, Dr. Peggy (Marshall) Williams of Pataskala, OH, and Joanne (Roger) Brooks of Pentress, WV; son-in-law David Bowyer of Ripley; five grandchildren, Brandon (Lindy) Williams of Grove City, OH, Ryan (Mandi) Williams of Dunwoody, GA, Susan Bowyer of Alexandria, VA, Kelli Brooks of Morgantown, WV, and Roger Brooks of Hilton Head, SC; three great-grandchildren, Brandon and Alexander Williams of Grove City and Sarai Williams of Dunwoody; niece, Tina (Dr. Lorenzo) Pence; nephew, Allan (Vivian) Clower; as well as several other dear nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family would like to send special thanks to the superlative staff at The Seasons in Lewisburg, WV , Tuscany Gardens and Tridia Hospice in Pataskala, OH as their warmth and compassion have given us the strength for this end-of-life journey. Grateful appreciation also to special friends, Lena Walton and Pastor Nancy Bulla.
A celebration of Mabel's life will be held at the Union Presbyterian Church on Sunday May 24, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. The family will receive friends on Saturday May 23, 2015 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Groves Funeral Home in Union, WV.
