PICKAWAY, WV -- Lucille Elizabeth Keeling Wallace, 86, of Pickaway, WV, passed away Friday, October 2, 2015 at the Springfield Center at Lindside. Born April 6, 1929 in Hurricane, WV, to the late Ross F. and Mamie A. (Hodges) Keeling. Lucille was the granddaughter of the late James Franklin "Squire" Keeling, Justice of the Peace of Hurricane. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Randall Wallace; a brother, Bill Keeling, and two sisters, Jean Brown and Ginger King.
Surviving are sons, Randy Wallace (Sally), Steve Wallace (Debbie); daughters, Terri Bennett, Susan Weikle (Charles) of Pickaway; brothers Ray Keeling of Huntington, Harold "Boots" Keeling of Pickaway. Grandchildren include: Roberta, Sam (Lacey), and Vanessa Wallace, Brandon Bennett, Lauren and Cassie Weikle; one great-grandchild John Randall Owens and several nieces and nephews.
Lucille lived her life trying to make an impact on the lives of her family and everyone she met. She believed in serving people and her community, but most importantly her service to the church was closest to her heart in which she was actively involved.
Lucille was retired from Monroe County Schools. She loved to help students learn to read, so at the age of 45, Lucille began working on a degree in teaching. She continued to work full-time and was active in her church and the community, while taking classes through several colleges and universities. Ten years later in 1985, Lucille graduated with honors from Bluefield State College.
Another one of Lucille's contributions was her dedication to donating blood. Almost every time the American Red Cross was conducting a blood drive, Lucille would gladly participate, donating over 22 gallons of blood.
Lucille was also known for exceptional piano playing. She began playing for her father's quartet in Summers County, while still a teenager. She was a member of the Kinsmen Quartet, who performed at many churches and venues across the state and recorded two albums. In later years, she played and sang with the Happy Four Quartet. Lucille also served as the pianist at Fairlea IPCC and the New Lebanon ARP Church.
Lucille was actively involved in the democratic political party in Monroe County as her husband, Randall, served as a county commissioner for 24 years. She served on the Democratic Executive Committee.
One of Lucille's great hobbies was her love of cooking, which allowed her to develop a cake decorating business, in which she made 100s of wedding, anniversary, and other celebratory cakes. She entered many categories at the WV State Fair, winning numerous ribbons over the years. In 1967, Lucille's cookie entry was selected for the first Archway Cookie Award, which became an annual award.
Lucille enjoyed traveling, which included Myrtle Beach, Pigeon Forge, Niagara Falls, Grand Canyon, Florida and overseas to Korea, Hong Kong, and Japan. In addition, she loved gardening and raising flowers.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 7, 2015 at the Groves Funeral Home Chapel in Union, WV with Rev. Calvin Weikel and Charles Weikle officiating. Burial will follow in New Lebanon Cemetery at Pickaway . Friends may call Tuesday, October 6, 2015 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
