SALT SULPHUR SPRINGS, WV --- John Thomas Roles Fullen, age 90, passed away Tuesday, June 23, 2015 at his residence surrounded by his loving family. Born April 18, 1925 at Salt Sulphur Springs, WV to the late John Elmer and Lila Ashworth Fullen. He was raised on the farm, which has been in the family since 1846. John descended from a family of brick and stone masons, which moved from Rockbridge County, VA in 1820 to serve as Construction Supervisors of the Salt Sulphur Springs Resort. All Fullens in Greenbrier and Monroe Counties are their descendents. Although raised a farmer, his career was interrupted by WWII, where John proudly served as a M.P. in the U.S. Army, serving his time in the South Pacific for several years including the areas of Saipan, Guam, and Iwo Jima. Later, for many years John and his brother, Albert worked a variety of crops and did custom farming for a number of area farmers in an era when very few local famers had tractors. John and Albert operated Royster-Fullen Fertilizer from 1962 buying out Royster in 1974 and operating as Fullen Fertilizer Company Inc. He also provided sales and services of Hardy outside wood burning stoves for the benefit of the local area. John was a member of the Union Lions Club, V.F.W, and the St. John's United Methodist Church at Salt Sulphur.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Jackie Ellen Fullen; one brother, Albert Ashworth Fullen; and one sister, Oretha Ann Fullen Vass. Survivors include, his loving wife, Ellen Marguerite Fisher Fullen of Salt Sulphur; one son, Tim Fullen and wife Linnie of Union, WV; one brother, Bernard Fullen and wife Virginia of Bowling Green, KY; three grandchildren, Hannah Fullen Roberts and husband Justin of Ballard, WV, John Dale "J.D." Fullen and wife Sonya of Union, WV, and Savannah Lynn Fullen of Union, WV; four great-grandchildren, Jakob, Katelin, Emily, and John Lukas "Luke"; three nieces and four nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 27, 2015 at the St. John's United Methodist Church at Salt Sulphur Springs, WV with Pastor Gene Fullen officiating. Burial will follow in the St. John's United Methodist Church Cemetery where the WV Honor Guard will conduct Military Graveside Rites. Tommy Vass, Jerry Fullen, J.D. Fullen, Justin Roberts, Eddie Fisher, and Tim Fullen will serve as Pallbearers. Friends may call Friday, June 26, 2015 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Groves Funeral Home in Union, WV.
