SINKS GROVE --- John B. Smith, 92, of Sinks Grove, WV, left this world to be with Jesus on September 27, 2017, after an extended illness and stay at The Brier Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Ronceverte, WV.
John was born in Frenchburg, KY, a son of the late Freeland and Mary Stowe Smith on September 24, 1925. He spent some time working as a guard at the Greenbrier Hotel in White Sulphur Springs and later worked as a carpenter for many years. He was a veteran of World War II, in which he served in the United States Navy. He was a member of Sinks Grove Baptist Church.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Freeland and Mary Smith, and six brothers, Bob, Haywood, Hobart, David, Edward, and Carl.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Alda Mae Waid Smith; 3 sons, Phillip Smith and his wife, Barbara, Darrell Smith and his wife, Missy; Kevin Smith and his wife, Cheryl; 2 daughters, Brenda Carty and her husband, JD, Lori Fitzwater and her husband, Steve; Eleven grandchildren - Sherry Romello, Sonya Adams, Kenny Hurt, Kevin Hurt, Casey Hurt, Darla Bell, Nicki Crouch, David Bennett, Alan Bennett, Steele Fitzwater, and Zachary Smith; 22 great-grandchildren; one great, great granddaughter; 3 sisters, Pauline Bennett, Betty Church, Nellie Brooks and her husband, Robert; brother-in-law, Nelson Waid and his wife, Vaida; sister-in-law, Nellie Hurley, several nieces and nephews and friends also survive.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, September 30, 2017, at Groves Funeral Home with Pastor Clark Morgan of Sinks Grove Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow at Greenbrier Memorial Gardens in Lewisburg, WV.
Friends may call at Groves Funeral Home, 715 Sweet Springs Valley Road, Union, WV 24983 from 6 – 8 pm on Friday, September 29, 2017.
Grandson and nephews will serve as Pallbearers.
