UNION, WV --- Jean Crosier Johnston Nichols, age 92, of Union, WV passed away Tuesday, December 8, 2020 at the Greenbrier Valley Medical Center in Fairlea, WV. She was the daughter of the late Virgil Lewis and Mabel Shaver Crosier. In her younger years, one of her favorites passions was dancing. She also was an avid reader and golfer. Spending time with family, friends, and her daily companion Molly, her poodle, brought Jean great joy. She also never stopped being a big sister to her siblings and loving aunt to her nieces and nephews. Jean was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church in Union. After 30 years of employment, Jean retired from Walter Wingo Jewelers at the Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, WV.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her two husbands, Stephen McCormick Johnston and Phillip Lee Nichols; sister, Virginia Dare Crosier; brothers, James Hoover, Franklin Delano "Jack", Gerald "Jerry", and Robert Lee "Bob" Crosier. Survivors include, Shirley Crosier Neel, Willaim Lewis "Bill" Crosier, and Sandra Sue Parker; two sister-in-laws, Margie Hanifan Crosier and Ether Goodwin Crosier; many nieces and nephews, and two dear friends, James and Talma Clarkson. The following is a history of the Johnston Family associated with the Monroe Watchman. Jean (Crosier) (Johnston) Nichols. Jean was preceded in death by her husband Stephen McCormick Johnston and his parents Izzie McNeer Johnston and Albert Sidney Johnston of Union who owned The Monroe Watchman newspaper, and nine brothers and sisters in law. The brothers and sisters in law include Albert Sidney Johnston Jr., Marion Stuart (Johnston) Steele who married William A. Steele Sr. of Union, James Malcolm Johnston of Union and former owner and editor of The Monroe Watchman, Charles Marshall Johnston formerly of Beckley and Florida, Caroline Virginia (Johnston) Irle of Beckley, Duncan McNeer Johnston of Alderson, Elizabeth (Libet) (Johnston) Donovan of Union and Washington, DC, Dorothy Isabel (Johnston) Ryan of Beckley, and Izzie (Johnston) McCoy of Union. Jean was preceded in death by nephews and nieces Marion Stuart (Cece) (Steele) Kelly, and William A. Steele Jr. of Texas, Robert McCoy of Pennsylvania, and James (Jimmy) McCoy of Union. Also, Jean is survived by nieces and nephews including Julia Johnston (Belton) Burckhalter of Florida, Betty Marshall Johnston of Pittsburgh, Albert Sidney Johnston of Alderson and Massachusetts, , Virginia Johnston Steele of Pittsburgh, and Paul Milburnn (Pat) Ryan Jr of Wisconsin. Further, Jean is survived by numerous grand nieces and grand nephews descendant from her nieces and nephews. Jean and her husband Stephen Johnston lived for the first few years of their married life in an apartment above the office and printing site of The Monroe Watchman newspaper. Jean said that whenever the printing press ran the whole building shook.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and out of love and respect for family and friends, a private family celebration of life for Jean and the late Jack M. Neel will be held in the Spring of 2021.
