GAP MILLS - Jean Walker Dransfield, 89, of Gap Mills, WV passed with loving hands on Tuesday, September 16, 2014 at Country View Assisted Living in Peterstown, West Virginia. Miss Jean was under hospice care following a short illness.
She was born September 9, 1925 at Leslie, WV, a daughter of the late Charles Bern and Eva Holcomb Walker.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death her loving husband, Beirne Virgil Dransfield.
Left to cherish her memory are her brother, Jimmie B Walker of Gap Mills, sons Charles B. Dransfield of Charleston and Donald W Dransfield and wife Pamela of Union, two grandsons, Devon W. Dransfield and wife Mary of Middlebrook, Va. and Ian B. Dransfield of Union.
Mrs. Dransfield was a graduate of Clay County High School, and began her teaching career in 1943 at Cherrydale School in Clay County as an emergency teacher during World War II. Following ten summers of school, she graduated from Glenville State College. She came to Monroe County in 1955 to work as the WVU Extension 4-H agent, and there met her farming husband. She later earned her Masters in Reading Disabilities in 1975 from Radford University and retired following a thirty five year teaching career as a Reading Specialist with Monroe County Schools.
She was a compassionate daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and guide, and served as pianist and Sunday School teacher at the Gap Mills United Methodist Church of which she was a member. She expressed her love for dolls in the creation of many ceramic dolls shared by her friends and family. Jean served her fellow retirees through Monroe Tours as a tour director, and so enjoyed the Red Hatters. Her memberships included the Retired School Employees, Delta Kappa Gamma Educational Sorority; she was a life member of the National Education Association and the West Virginia 4-H All Stars.
Groves Funeral Home is in charge of her arrangements with visitation scheduled for Thursday evening from 6 to 8 PM. A Life Celebration service will be on Friday, September 19 at 11 AM with Reverend Gene Fullen presiding at Gap Mills United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at the Carmel Cemetery. Grandsons, nephews and family friends will serve as pall bearers with nephews, Arbie Glenn Dransfield, Henry Ray Dransfield and Michael Leighton Dransfield serving as honorary pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given to the Monroe County 4-H Foundation at PO Box 238 Union, WV, 24983.
