UNION, WV --- James Richard Vandegrift, age 81, of Union, WV passed away at home on his birthday, Wednesday, January 11, 2023 following a long illness. Born January 11, 1942 in Hollywood, WV, he was a life-long resident of Monroe County, WV. He worked in logging until he started a career at Westvaco where he retired after 38 years. After his retirement from Westvaco, he went back to work at Vandegrift Logging for several years.

James was married to his late wife Lanelle for 57 years. He was a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather. He loved working, spending time with his pets, maintaining his home, and his pride and joy, his 1969 Ford Mustang that he restored.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby "Lanelle" Vandegrift, his son, Richard Douglas Vandegrift; brother, Paul Vandegrift; niece, Edna Boggs; nephew, John Vandegrift; and daughter, Victoria Lane Vandegrift. He is survived by his grandson, Richard Douglas Vandegrift, II; daughter-in-law, Kathy Hutchins-Vandegrift; step-granddaughter, Brandy Shrader; niece, Darlene Carter; nephew, Paul Vandegrift, Jr.; and several cousins.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Monday, January 16, 2023 at the Groves-Mann Funeral Home Chapel in Union, WV. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery at Keenan, WV. The family will receive friends on Monday, January 16, 2023 from 12:00 p.m. until time of the service at the funeral home.
