Obituary

SINKS GROVE, WV – Jack Alton Dunbar, age 87, of Sinks Grove, passed away on the afternoon of Monday, May 11th, at Peyton Hospice House, Fairlea. Born February 16, 1939, in Ronceverte Hospital, he was the son of the late Everett McBride Dunbar and Lena Eaglar Taylor Dunbar.

Jack was a graduate in the Class of 1957 at Union High School. He joined the US Air Force in 1958 and served his country for twenty-one years, including two tours in Thailand during the Vietnam war era, before exchanging his uniform for civilian clothes in 1978.

He worked at Bendix/ABB from 1978 until 2000, before retiring from there. During that same time, he also completed a BS degree at Bluefield State in 1985. From 1993 until 2008, he also owned and operated Greenbrier Valley Computers; and from 1989 until 2019, he was the owner and operator of Breezy Heights Produce Farm. For a time, he also installed home and business alarm systems.

A Master Gardener, Jack established the Monroe Farm Market, was a former president of the Lewisburg Farm Market, and helped found the WV State Farmers Market Association while serving five years as that group’s first president.

Always active in the community, Jack was a member of the Union Lions Club, and served as an elder at Union Presbyterian Church. He had been a scoutmaster for a Cub Scout Troop while stationed in California.

He enjoyed all kinds of music: country, jazz, R&B, 60’s rock, and classic. An avid reader, he once read all the books in the Union High School Library. He also found pleasure in hunting and fishing, working in his garden, and being a Ham radio operator. Jack liked to cook, especially smoking meat and grilling; and was fond of Thai and Philippine cuisine, particularly that made by his daughter-in-law, Lina. And he enjoyed spending time with family, and seeing his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Jack is survived by his wife and partner of 66 years, Barbara, of the home; his beloved sons, George and wife, Lina, of Virgina Beach, and Danny and wife, Nikki, of Sinks Grove; cherished grandchildren, Nelda Casas and husband, Renbo Leyson, George “J.R” and wife, Amber, Eugene and wife, Nicki, and Nicholas; great-grandchildren, Richard and Rhenier, Owen and Luca, and Addilyn; a sister-in-law, Josie Laurent, of Little Rock, Arkansas; brother-in-law, Bill Wickline, of Union; and nephews, Brian Wickline, of Union, David Laurent, of Little Rock, AR, Dewayne Laurent, of Florida, and Tom Wilson, of Sinks Grove.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Judy Wickline; sister-in-law, Gayle Wilson, and brothers-in-law, Herald Laurent, and Jerry Wilson.

The family would like to thank Dr. Katherine Calloway, Medical Director of Hospice West Virginia, and the staff at Peyton Hospice House in Fairlea, for their medical professionalism and compassion.

In lieu of flowers, the family would be grateful if contributions are made in Jack’s memory to Union Presbyterian Church, PO Box 239, Union WV, 24983.
