Obituary

Dr. Harvey C. "Doc" Foland, 93 a World War II veteran of Union, passed away Wednesday night, June 4, 2014 at the Springfield Nursing Home at Lindside following a short illness.
He was born September 10, 1920 at Elgin, Nebraska as the eldest of a family of five of the late Troy Clay and Maria Anna Ladwig Foland.
A qualified Sharpshooter served in the US Army 124th Cavalry, a horse mounted unit, he was a member of the Mars Task Force servicing in Burma, China, proud of his service to his country, as one of the "Marsmen" Honorably Discharged as a 2nd Lieutenant, he earned the Bronze Star Medal with one Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster, Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign, Combat Medical Badge 1st Award and Honorable Service Lapel Button. After his discharge he attended Colorado State University where he received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree.
While driving to his first job in Virginia, he happened to overnight in Lewisburg, by chance he found that Monroe County needed a veterinarian and the rest is history. An Honorary Life Member of the American Veterinary Medical Association. Doc cared for Monroe County pets and farm animals until his retirement in 1994. He continued to serve his community outside of his veterinary practice by being a member of the Rotary Club, serving two terms on the Monroe County Board of Education, a Charter Member and first president of the Union Lions Club.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Marjorie Blakeman Foland in 2003, 2 brothers, Daniel and Jim; and a sister, Betty Jane.
Surviving are his son, Dr. Troy H. Foland and wife, Ann; 3 cherished grandchildren, Caleb Patrick Foland Joshua Abraham Foland and Esther Rose Foland all of Cumberland, Maryland; a brother, William Foland of Colorado; other family members include, John Garcia, who Doc thought of as his second son, and his wife, Christy and their children, John Robert and Carmen, and special friends who were very helpful during his illness, Faye Hancock, Henry Ray and Ann Dransfield and John Furrow.
Graveside Rites will be held 2:00 PM., Sunday, June 8, 2014 at the Green Hill Cemetery at Union with Rev. DeWitt Furrow and John Furrow officiating. Burial will follow in the Green Hill Cemetery at Union.
Friends may call at the Groves Funeral Home in Union from 5 – 7 PM. Saturday June 7, 2014.
Military Graveside Rites will be conducted by the West Virginia Honor Guard.
The family requests that memorial donations be to the American Cancer Society.
