Obituary

UNION, WV --- Glen Arnold Betler, age 89, of Union, WV passed away Thursday, June 18, 2015 at Peyton Hospice House in Fairlea, WV following a long illness. Born September 19, 1925 in Helvetia, WV he was the son of the late Arnold L. and Ella Karlen Betler. Glen was a U.S. Army World War II Veteran. He saw action in Northern France and Belgium where he became a Prisoner of War during the Battle of the Bulge. He received several ribbons and the Bronze Star Medal. After the war, he enrolled in West Virginia University where he graduated in 1951. Following graduation, Glen was employed by the West Virginia Conservation Commission (now Division of Natural Resources) and the Soil Conservation Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture. During his 31 year Career with the SCS, he headed the field office in Union, where he enjoyed working with farmers to develop plans for best land-use practices. Glen was a member of the Union Presbyterian Church where he served as Deacon, Elder, and Treasurer. He also served on the Bluestone Conference Committee.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Delbert L. Betler and a sister, Thelma Betler Oesch. Survivors include, his loving wife of 61 years, Patricia "Pat" Smith Betler of Union, WV; one son, Mark D. Betler of Union, WV; one sister, Dorothy Shaw of Shelbyville, WV; three brothers, Lawrence Betler and wife Donnie of Kingwood, WV, Jim Betler and wife Jeannie of Ohio, and Vernon Betler and wife Wilma of Parsons, WV; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive.
Funeral services will be held 12:30 p.m. Sunday, June 21, 2015 at the Union Presbyterian Church in Union, WV with Nancy Bulla officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery, Union, WV. Friends may call Saturday, June 20, 2015 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Groves Funeral Home in Union, WV. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations of sympathy be made to the Union Presbyterian Church C/O Bob Miller Union, WV 24983 , Alzheimer's research at P.O.
