Obituary

Edwina "Gail" Beals O'Day
March 31, 1936 – December 14, 2024

Edwina "Gail" Beals O'Day, aged 88, a resident of Greenville, West Virginia, and a former longtime resident of Brookfield, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, surrounded by her loving family, on December 14, 2024.

"Gail," as she was most known by her family and friends, was born on March 31, 1936, along with her twin brother Edwin Dale in Blaine, Maine.  She was predeceased by her parents, Eugene Beals and Goldena Hawksley Beals, as well as her biological father Edwin Beals. Gail was also predeceased by her son Kevin Eugene O'Day, who passed on January 25, 2024, her grandson Ryan Patrick O'Day, who passed on June 9, 2007, her great-grandson Cecil Layne Webb, who passed on November 8, 2024, her twin brother Edwin Beals, and her sister Joy Green.

Gail was the cherished wife of the late Irving "Sonnie" Patrick O'Day, of Sarton, West Virginia, with whom she shared 36 wonderful years of marriage until his passing in 1993. Together, they raised nine children, building a family rooted in love and devotion. Later in life, Gail found companionship and love with Loren "Doug" Harvey, of Christiansburg, Virginia, who shared 18 years with her until his passing in 2024.

Gail is survived by her eight remaining children and their spouses: Patrick and Joan O'Day of Brookfield, MA, Donna O'Day (wife of Kevin) of Plainfield, CT, John O'Day and June Sailor-O'Day of Ringe, NH, Laurel O'Day Grondin of Oxford, MA, Dawn O'Day of Kyoto, Japan, Sharlene O'Day of Union, WV, Darryl and Jill O'Day of Warren, MA, Melissa O'Day and fiancé Corey Plourde of Woodstock, CT and Kara O'Day-Webb and David Webb of Covington, VA. Gail also leaves behind a loving legacy of 27 grandchildren (and spouses), 30 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren, her brother Earl Beals of Hyannis, MA, sister-in-law Rosalie Beals of Dudley, MA and numerous nieces and nephews who adored her.

Gail was a devoted mother, grandmother and friend. Her dedication and support for her family and friends was momentous as she always made sure everyone had what they needed and more. She was so full of love and treasured family and friends' time over anything else in this world. When recently asked what the one thing she was most proud of was, she said "raising my children" and she shared those were the happiest days of her life.  She created so many amazing memories, not only for her own children but for every child that walked through her door who felt as loved as if they were her own. She was the true matriarch of her family, standing strong and always leading the way.

Gail loved to go dancing, often showcasing her graceful moves, and always dressing stylishly. Her love of music carried her through life as she danced through many challenges with grace and resilience. She had a voice as sweet as an angel and has passed on her love of music and her talent through many generations. Gail had a knack for decorating, sending thoughtful cards and letters, making something out of nothing for a meal when company unexpectedly showed up and for making the best pies for the holidays. She was a very talented and wonderful seamstress who created the most beautiful handmade items that will be forever treasured.

Gail spent many years as a certified nursing assistant working in nursing homes and private duty caring for her patients as she did her family and friends. She will be remembered for her gentle spirit and her unwavering faith, having the unique ability to make everyone feel special and being a source of comfort and strength to all who knew her.

Gail's legacy of love and kindness will live on through her family and all those whose lives she has touched. She will be dearly missed but fondly remembered forever.
