Obituary

SINKS GROVE, WV --- Edna Wiley Burwell, 88 of Sinks Grove, WV went to live with her heavenly father on February 22, 2021.  There was certainly a joyful reunion when she was finally able to see her loving husband of 49 years, Roy Samuel Burwell.  Born June 29, 1932, in Athens, WV, she was the daughter of the late Marcus and Lois Wiley.

Edna was a life-long and dedicated member of the Mt. Pleasant Community Church, where she served as an Elder and Clerk of Session for several years.  Edna was an active member and was always willing to help in any way she could.  She always had an open-door policy for people in need.  Edna was a dedicated member of her community and wanted to make sure that the future generations knew the value of its beauty.  When the church celebrated 150 years Edna retyped all the records for the church which she was very proud of.

Edna was a seamstress, excellent cook, and valued any time that she had with friends and family members.  She enjoyed watching her grandchildren play sports or take part in any school functions.  Edna always looked forward to her family gatherings, she was very proud of her family always willing to help any of them in any way that she could.

Edna worked on quilts diligently up to 3 weeks prior to her passing.  Edna provided a gift to each of her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchild.

She was an employee of the Alderson Credit Union for 25 years after her retirement from Bendix Corporation with 25 years of service.  Edna and Roy owned Roy's Grocery in Sinks Grove.  She was on the board of New Lebanon Cemetery Association.  Edna was always active in 4-H and was a 4-H all-star and leader of the Better Builders 4-H club for many years.  She was a member of Sinks Grove CEOS for 70 years as well as the Monroe County Quilting Club.  She was a 1950 graduate of Union High School.

Edna was preceded in death by her husband Roy; brothers Nace Wiley and Eugene Wiley; sisters Rhonda Hylton and Trixie Long.

Survivors include one sister, Polly Plunkett of Sevierville, TN; two brothers, Joe (Genieve) Wiley of Ronceverte, Charlie (Teresa) Wiley of Covington, VA; and sister-n-law Betty Burwell.  Four loving children include Freda Bostic (Rick) and Shirley Reed (Raymond), both of Sinks Grove; Roger Cosgro of Thailand; Mark Burwell (Kim) of Harrisonburg, VA.  Grandchildren:  Stacey Phipps (Jack) of Sinks Grove; Jennifer Hunter (Chris) of Caldwell; Alicia Winters (Billy) of Lewisburg; Nathan Carter (Meredith) of Valdosta, GA; Melissa Griffith (Darren) of Gap Mills; Sam Burwell (Kaity) of Exton, PA; Amy Burwell of Harrisonburg, VA; and Alexander Cosgro of Russia.   Great grandchildren:  Taylor Mann (Garrett) of Ballard; Noah and Evan Hunter of Caldwell; Shannon and Jackson Phipps of Sinks Grove; Landon Carter of Valdosta, GA; Peighton and Paxton Griffith of Gap Mills; Will and Jace Winters of Lewisburg; Roy Burwell of Exton, PA.  Great-great grandchild: Lyra Mann of Ballard. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 6, 2021 at the Mt. Pleasant Community Church in Sinks Grove, WV with Pastor James Hylton officiating. Burial will follow in New Lebanon Cemetery in Pickaway, WV.  The family will receive friends Saturday, March 6, 2021 from 12:00 Noon until time of the service at the Church. Pallbearers are Larry Burwell, Larry Cosgro, Jack Phipps, Chris Hunter, Billy Winters, Darren Griffith.  Honorary Pallbearers are Jim Vandyke, Ernest Bland, Art Baker, Wes Sheridan, Eric South, Trent White and Donald Coleman.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Monroe County 4-H foundation or Mt. Pleasant Community Church in her honor.  Due to COVID-19 Pandemic regulations, those who are planning on attending the services are asked to wear a mask and practice social distancing.
