Gap Mills, WV --- Kendall Porterfield, 92, of Gap Mills, passed away Thursday, January 5, 2017 at the White Sulphur Springs Center following a short illness.
He was born at Gap Mills, WV, April 2, 1924 a son of the late William Preston and Nina Myrtle Young Porterfield.
Mr. Porterfield worked his entire life on the family farm, first at a young age with his dad and brother and later in years with his own two sons. Although he had a very successful dairy operation, he got his joy and passion from planting and harvesting the crops. He was an active member of the Pine Grove United Methodist Church where he has served in numerous roles throughout the years. He loved to sing hymns and was known to serenade the dairy cows with his beautiful voice.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Juanita Baker Porterfield in 1994; a grandson Stuart Jones and 2 sisters, Lanelle Griffith and Phyllis Shrader.
Surviving are 2 sons, Keith Porterfield and wife, Janet ; Ronnie Porterfield and wife, Phyllis all of Gap Mills; 2 daughters, Cathy Jones of Roanoke, Va. and Robin Miller and her husband, Rob of Sweet Springs; 7 grandchildren, Dean Porterfield, David Porterfield and wife, Barbie; Sherry Lowe and husband, Chris; Lori Mahon and husband, Ken; Dustin Miller, Patrick Jones, Corey Miller and wife, Cassie; he was also blessed with 12 great grandchildren, Landon, Kaden and Jordan Lowe; Brenna, Alexis and Erin Porterfield; Brady Chinault; Brett and Austin Mahon; Hunter Miller; Bristol Jones and Avery Miller; a brother, Alvin Porterfield and his wife, Eleanor of Lewisburg. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 pm. Monday, January 9, 2017 at the Pine Grove United Methodist Church at Gap Mills with Pastors Mark and Marva Smearman officiating.
Burial will follow in the Carmel Cemetery at Gap Mills, WV.
