LINDSIDE, WV --- Burke Johnson Shires, age 91, of Lindside, WV, passed away Wednesday, August 18, 2021 at Stonerise Nursing Home in Lindside, WV.  Born May 14, 1930 in Union, WV, he was the son of the late Paul H. Shires and Margaret Smith Shires Dickinson Keiffer. Burke's Father was killed in an explosion while working for the Highway Department when Burke was 3 days old. Burke spent his childhood in Alderson, WV. He graduated from Alderson High School. He then went on to work until his retirement at Raytheon in Falls Church, VA, where he worked as a Quality Control Engineer for 35 years. Burke loved carpentry work and doing woodworking projects. He also had a love for outdoor photography. Burke took many pictures in and around Monroe County, WV, showing off the county's natural beauties and landscapes. He submitted many photographs for people to enjoy to the Monroe Watchman for many years. He also published two books entitled "A Photographic Journey" book 1 and 2, showcasing some of the most beautiful and scenic places in Monroe County, WV. Burke always strived to help people and do for others as much as he could.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Paul Shires. Survivors include his loving wife of 63 years, Bonnie Meadows Shires of Lindside, WV; two sons, Steven Shires and wife Alicia of Lexington, VA, and Kevin Shires and wife Barbi of Ashburn, VA; three grandchildren, Trevor Shires of Centerville, VA, Abigail Shires of Ashburn, VA, and Michael Shires of Lexington, VA; three nephews, Dr. Jay Shires of Hunt Valley, MD, Gary Shires of Richmond, VA, and James Shires of Stanardsville, VA.

Funeral services will be held 4:00 p.m. Sunday, August 22, 2021 at the Groves-Mann Funeral Home Chapel in Union, WV with Pastor Gene Fullen officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery, Union, WV. The family will receive friends Sunday, August 22 , 2021 from 3:00 p.m. until time of the service at the funeral home.
