Bonnie Meadows
Shires
April 21, 1938 – February 4, 2026
Bonnie Meadows Shires passed away peacefully at home in Falls Church, Virginia, on February 4, 2026, following complications from ALS. She was born in Rock Camp, West Virginia, and was the last surviving child of Albert Howard Meadows and Nellie Copland Meadows.
Bonnie graduated from Union High School in 1957 and began her career at the American Chemical Society in Washington, D.C. When her children were young, she devoted herself fully to being a stay-at-home mother. Later, she worked for 22 years at the Conservative Caucus Research and Education Foundation in Vienna, Virginia.
Bonnie often spoke fondly of growing up on a farm and carried that appreciation for a simple, hardworking life throughout her years. She enjoyed baking, watching movies, playing bingo, reading, and spending time with her Red Hat group. Most of all, she cherished time with her family, cousins, and friends.
In addition to her parents, Bonnie was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 64 years, Burke Johnson Shires; her brother, Carl Meadows; and her sisters, Evelyn Ferguson, Wilma Loveless, and Mary Jane Sanders.
She is survived by her sons, Steven Shires and his wife Alicia of Lexington, Virginia, and Kevin Shires and his wife Barbi of Ashburn, Virginia; her grandchildren, Trevor Shires and his wife Gabby of Akron, Ohio, Abigail Donovan and her husband Kelvy of Fredericksburg, Virginia, and Michael Shires of Lexington, Virginia; special nieces Becky King and Sherrie Roberts of Delaware; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will cherish her memory.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial donations in Bonnie's honor be made to Dropping Lick United Methodist Church, 3603 Willow Bend Road, Union, WV 24983, or to the Monroe County Public Library, 303 S. Main Street, Union, WV 24983.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00PM on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, at the Groves-Mann Funeral Home in Union, WV, with Pastor Gene Fullen officiating. Burial will follow at Green Hill Cemetery in Union, WV. Visitation will be held from 12:00PM until time of services on Tuesday at the funeral home.
