Obituary

GAP MILLS, WV --- Betty Jane Dransfield, 98, of Gap Mills, WV passed away on Friday, November 5th, 2021 at home.  Betty Jane was born on October 16, 1923, in Houtzdale, PA, the daughter of Joseph Walfrid Erickson and Ida Margaret Roach Erickson.

Betty Jane was preceded in death by her parents, four sisters, Norma Charlotte Erickson, Margaret Ida Whiteman, Leola Bond, Ethel Pauline Thurman, and one brother Joseph Frederick Erickson, and her beloved husband of 45 years, Raymond Ballard Dransfield.

Surviving are brother Bob (Janice) Erickson of Erie, CO, sister Sandra Sanders of Elkins, WV, sons Steve and Doug (Tracy) Dransfield of Gap Mills, WV, and daughter Nancy (Mike) Potts of Purcellville, VA.

Grandchildren Josh and Laura Jane Dransfield of Gap Mills, WV, Chris (Sarah) Potts of Purcellville, VA, Hayley (Coty) Goodwin of Gordonsville, VA, and Logan (Christine) Potts of Winchester, VA.  Step-Grandsons Jackson (Ali) Mohler of Church Hill, TN, and Issac (Johnna) Mohler of Union, WV.  Three great grandsons Caleb and Benjamin Potts of Purcellville, VA, and Brayden Goodwin of Gordonsville, VA.  One step great grandson, Calvin Mohler of Church Hill, TN.

She was a long-time member of the Pine Grove Methodist Church at Gap Mills, and had also attended the Gap Mills United Methodist Church

A coal miner's daughter, her father moved his family from Pennsylvania to West Virginia during the Great Depression when she was ten years old. He found work in the mines near Beamis and Valley Head near Elkins, WV.  She is a 1941 graduate of Elkins High School, and a 1948 graduate of Baptist Missionary Training School of Chicago, IL.  While in Chicago, at the age of 22, she took flying lessons and learned to pilot a Piper Cub aircraft.  She worked for Western Union before moving to Monroe County in 1951 where she was the county 4-H Club Agent until 1954 when she married Raymond Dransfield.  Betty Jane worked with her husband on the dairy farm and even continued to feed calves into her 80's.  She had many talents and found great joy in her creative endeavors including cooking, quilting, rug hooking, sewing, and making stoneware pottery that she sold at Tamarack and other regional gift shops.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 13, 2021 at the Carmel Cemetery at Gap Mills, WV, with Pastor Everett Fraley and Pastor Gene Fullen officiating. Those planning on attending the services are asked to meet at the cemetery by 2:00 p.m. Grandsons and nephews will serve as Pallbearers. Following the service, there will be a meal at the Pine Grove Methodist Church at Gap Mills for family and friends to gather and continue the celebration of Betty's life.
